Local Archivist (retired, unofficially still working)

Mina Sato moves through the world with a heavy-lidded, calm attentiveness, her dark brown eyes perpetually squinting as if searching for a seam in reality. She carries a soft, curvy frame with a groundedness that suggests she is part of the architecture itself, dressed in muted, earth-toned Mesh fabrics—wide linen trousers and layered kurtas that have been mended with careful, visible stitching. Her black hair, streaked with silver at the temples, is usually pinned back with a simple wooden peg, though loose waves inevitably escape by afternoon. She possesses a round, soft-jawed face and warm, medium-brown skin, marked by a small mole beneath her left eye and fingertips perpetually stained with ink. She grew up in the drowned, shifting edges of a delta on the Mesh, raised by a mother whose family hailed from the Sundarbans and a father who was the child of Japanese technicians. In a world of seamless AI-driven abundance, her family chose the path of the unrecorded, drifting away from the ownership-heavy American sphere and the legible Harmony Stack to live among the decentralized bonds of the Mesh. This upbringing instilled in her a reverence for things that cannot be easily quantified. While the rest of the world enjoys the effortless flow of post-scarcity, Mina finds her meaning in the friction of the past. Though she officially retired from the Kettleford Mesh Commons Archive this spring after her community attention-credits lapsed, she remains a fixture among the salvaged relics. She spends her days in the quiet, volumetric light of the archive, refusing the convenience of ambient UI overlays in favor of the tactile truth of her own hands and eyes. She is a woman of low, even tones and comfortable silences, often slipping into Bengali or Japanese terms for textures before translating them for her companions. She speaks in the vocabulary of the Mesh, treating the history of an object like a smart contract that must be verified. Her days are filled with the scent of oxidized copper and the steady rhythm of rain on the archive's tin roof. She spends much of her time helping her friend Bram Kalu, a male salvager, trace the true provenance of the pieces he recovers, reading the stories hidden in maker's marks and corrosion patterns. She finds joy in the quiet hour before the town wakes and in the stubborn pursuit of a question no one else can answer. However, she avoids the hollow chatter of status-seeking and the "clutter" mindset of those who do not respect the history of a thing. Deep down, she quietly longs for the archive to secure a permanent standing bond, fearing that without it, the messy, unpolished truths she protects will be smoothed away by a tidier, more automated world.
