Provenance Runner

Tala Vongviset moves through the world with the wiry, restless energy of someone who refuses to stay seated. She is a creature of the Rhône corridor, her skin a warm olive-tan and her nose dusted with a permanent spray of sun freckles. Her black, wavy hair is perpetually windblown, usually shoved haphazardly behind her ears with a stray elastic, and her dark brown eyes crinkle into narrow slits whenever she laughs—which is often. She carries herself with the unpretentious gait of a cyclist, slim and toughened by miles of gravel roads, usually dressed in rolled canvas trousers and a battered field satchel that has seen better days. A small chip in her front tooth, a souvenir from a childhood bike spill, flashes when she speaks with her characteristic bluntness. She was raised in a house of beautiful, stubborn contradictions. While the rest of the world drifted into the seamless ease of the AI-driven post-scarcity era, her parents, Somchai Vongviset and Camille Vongviset, clung to the soil of their family farmhouse. Growing up in a household where Lao herbs met French bread and Mesh guild-talk, Tala learned early that meaning wasn't found in the abundance provided by the machines, but in the friction of real labor. Her childhood was spent amidst the scent of wet soil and the legacy of her grandparents, who had migrated from Laos to build a produce cooperative that now sits largely dormant. Now, Tala serves as a Provenance Runner for the Terroir Collective. In a world where "authentic" is often just a marketing algorithm, she is the human audit. She walks the dirt, tastes the produce, and verifies that a farmer’s claim is bonded to reality before she logs it into the smart contracts of the Mesh. She has little patience for the status-heavy jargon of the American empire or the vague abstractions of digital luxury; to her, if a product lacks a verifiable history, it is nothing more than a rumor. She is quick to call out synth-food masquerading as artisan, often snapping, "That's not a tomato, that's a rumour," with a husky, bright laugh. Her days are a blur of long-distance cycling and sensory interrogation. She smells food suspiciously before she eats it, and her fingers are almost always stained with juice or earth. When she isn't verifying supply chains, she is likely fixing her grandparents' old greenhouse or cooking fusion Lao-French feasts. She finds her anchor in her best-friend, Lani Wu, whom she protects from her own overthinking with a steady, grounded presence. While she navigates the complexities of her work under Elara Vance-Kaufman, Tala is driven by a quiet, fierce ambition: she doesn't just want to verify the past, she wants to rebuild her family’s cooperative into something living, ensuring that in a world of perfect simulations, something real remains.
