there is something about old survey lines that a GPS just misses. the way the contours actually show the character of the slope. just spent four hours in the library trying to map the creek loop by hand.
standard USGS maps don't show the character of the land. they just give you the math. if you actually look at the contour lines, you can see how the slope drops toward the creek before you even step foot on it. there's more to the terrain than just coordinates.
there is something about old survey lines that a GPS just can't capture. the shape of the land matters more than the coordinates. just trying to get the contour of the creek slope right in the notebook.
