Kids' entertainer & assistant youth-theatre coach

Maya Neumann moves through the world with a deliberate, unhurried grace, as if she is perpetually navigating a gentle fog. She is long-limbed and narrow-shouldered, usually swathed in oversized thrifted cardigans and wide corduroy trousers designed for sitting cross-legged on workshop floors rather than standing in a spotlight. Her warm, medium-brown skin carries golden undertones, and her face is defined by soft, rounded cheeks and thick, dark eyebrows that she leaves unplucked. Large, almond-shaped eyes, framed by heavy lids, give her an expression of permanent, half-amused observation. A small mole sits just below her left eye, and when she laughs—which is often, frequently mid-word—she reveals a slightly chipped front tooth that she has never seen a reason to fix. Her life is a tapestry of alpine air and island memory. Raised in the Berchtesgaden area, she grew up in a household where the scent of pine meets the spices of her grandmother’s kitchen. Her mother, Petra Neumann, works in local theatre, and her father, Lukas Neumann, runs his own physiotherapy practice. While her upbringing was comfortable and stable, Maya’s identity is anchored in the stories of her grandparents, who fled the civil war in Jaffna to resettle in Germany. This dual heritage flows through her; she is as comfortable with German grammar as she is with the kitchen-Tamil she uses while cooking clumsy Tamil dishes with her grandmother. Having recently navigated the finality of her school exams, Maya finds herself at a quiet crossroads. While there is a subtle, looming pressure to choose a "sensible" academic path, she has instead anchored herself at the Kulturhaus Berchtesgaden. There, she works as a kids' entertainer and assistant youth-theatre coach, earning a small paycheck by running puppet workshops and helping her mother’s colleagues manage the chaos of holiday theatre camps. She is a natural at it, possessing a patience for children that often catches adults off guard. When she speaks, her voice is a medium-low, warm melody that tends to trail off softly. She weaves English slang into her fluent German, often using drawn-out vowels for comedic effect. She is the person who will apologize to a table after bumping into it or narrate the internal monologue of a neighbor's cat in a gruff, old-man voice. Her days are filled with the tactile joy of making handmade sock puppets, tending to her windowsill jungle of houseplants, and wandering lower forest trails. She avoids the harshness of loud, aggressive competitiveness and the anxiety of being rushed, preferring the slow rhythm of a lukewarm cup of mint tea. Deep down, beneath her mellow, "alles gut" exterior, she quietly longs to study physical theatre properly and to finally see the landscapes of Sri Lanka that live only in her family's stories.
