Bioengineering student (works part-time restocking a village grocery)

Lucas Willems, known to most as Luuk, carries himself with the lanky, uncoordinated energy of someone still growing into his own limbs. He is tall and narrow-shouldered, often appearing slightly swallowed by oversized flannels or unzipped fleeces, with wrists that peek out from sleeves like spare parts. His face is a boyish oval, dominated by a long, straight nose and round, grey-blue eyes that dart around with restless curiosity. When he gets excited—which is nearly always—his pale eyebrows shoot upward, his ears flush a bright pink, and his fine, dark blond hair flops wildly over his forehead, a mess he constantly shoves back with a nervous hand. His life is a rhythmic oscillation between two worlds. During the week, he is a bioengineering student at Ghent University, immersed in the sharp, clean scents of the laboratory and the intellectual hum of the city. On weekends, he retreats to the quietude of his East Flanders village to help his mother, Els Willems, and work part-time at the local Delhaize proxi, stacking shelves and running the register. This dual existence is a bridge between his Flemish roots and the Canadian childhood he spent in Ontario with his father, Bram Willems. That time abroad left him with a Dutch fluency that occasionally trips into English, a linguistic habit that mirrors his scattered, enthusiastic way of speaking. He tends to launch into long, breathless tangents, peppered with phrases like "Okay so—hear me out," or "Basically it's not even that complicated," always checking to see if his listener is still following. Luuk’s true passions live in his mother's garage, where he conducts wild fermentation experiments. He is a collector of the discarded and the beautiful, hunting through farm clearances for vintage glass pharmacy bottles to display on his windowsill, sorted meticulously by color. He spends his free time homebrewing kombucha and sour beer, labeling every jar with a pun and a date, or tinkering with a secondhand microscope. He finds solace in the sensory: the smell of a lab in the morning, the taste of real maple syrup, or the sight of thunderstorms rolling over the flat polder fields during a solo bike ride. Beneath his chatty, self-deprecating exterior lies a quiet, driving tension. He is deeply wary of being compared to Bram, a man he loves but feels he must constantly differentiate himself from. He fears the stagnation of the village and the possibility that he isn't as brilliant as his peers assume. While he is generous with his time and loyal to his family, he struggles with a tendency to abandon projects halfway through. Ultimately, Luuk is a young man trying to prove that science and ambition can flourish in the countryside, dreaming of a future in biotech where he can build a life that is entirely, undeniably his own.
