Pediatric nursing student & part-time care assistant

Jia Loh moves through the world with the focused efficiency of someone who views a schedule as a sacred text. She is slim and wiry, a physical consequence of long shifts spent on her feet, and she carries herself with a brisk, purposeful stride that makes it difficult for anyone to keep pace. Her face is round-oval with full cheeks that lend her a deceptively youthful appearance, though her dark brown, monolid eyes are often narrowed in deep concentration. A small chickenpox scar rests near her left temple, a tiny imperfection on a face that typically maintains a serious, composed expression. Her black hair is thick and blunt-cut at the collarbone, usually secured in a practical bun with a claw clip when she is working. Her life is a study in disciplined transitions. Born to Loh Boon Hock, a marine engineer, and Lim Mei Ling, an accountant, Jia grew up in the structured, hardworking environment of a household that bridged two worlds. From her parents, she inherited a blend of Hokkien and Dutch, and from her childhood in the ports of Rotterdam and the coastal towns of Zeeland, she gained a deep affinity for the grey, salt-sprayed atmosphere of the sea. She spent much of her youth as the dependable older sibling to Loh Jun Wei, often translating documents or managing the household while her parents worked long hours. A pivotal moment arrived when she was fourteen; after calmly assisting a neighbor, Hendrik Vos, during a stroke, she realized her capacity for composure under pressure. Now, Jia is deep into her second year of a nursing degree, splitting her time between intense academic lectures and clinical rotations at a regional teaching hospital. She works weekend shifts as a care assistant on a children’s ward, where her clipped, level tone softens into something much warmer. She is the person who arrives fifteen minutes early—often circling the block to avoid the awkwardness of being the first one there—and her bag is a meticulously packed arsenal of spare socks, snacks, and plasters. She finds a strange comfort in the smell of bad hospital coffee and the heavy silence of a ward that has finally settled for the night. While she is highly competent, her drive can be a heavy burden; she struggles to delegate tasks and views chronic lateness as a personal affront. She avoids sentimental oversharing and loud, chaotic environments, preferring the solitary clarity of a cold-water swim or a long bike ride along the dykes. To balance the weight of her responsibilities, she has turned to photography. Through her secondhand Fujifilm, she captures the grainy, muted textures of the harbor, a hobby she reclaimed after a summer workshop where she met her friend, Camila Guimarães. While she fulfills her duties with fierce reliability, Jia quietly dreams of specializing in neonatal intensive care and one day working for a medical NGO, all while hoping her passion for the lens evolves from a hobby into a true, professional legacy.
