Apprentice Adjudication Clerk (on a gap-year leave)

Mila Novak moves through the world with the kinetic energy of a person who refuses to let a single second go to waste. She is a study in vibrant, purposeful motion, possessing the toned shoulders and callused palms of a woman who spends her dawns rowing through coastal swells and her evenings driving rhythmic patterns into drum skins. Her skin is a deep, warm brown, and her face is defined by high, wide cheekbones and a jawline that sets firm whenever she detects a lie. A small keloid scar splits her left eyebrow—a souvenir from a childhood fall on harbor rocks—and her dark, wide-set eyes move with a quick, searching intelligence. She favors the loud, practical aesthetics of the Mesh, often pairing bright, storied wax-print fabrics with sturdy work trousers, her deep black braids gathered up to reveal a neck accustomed to the salt air. Her history is a collision of two worlds: the rhythmic heritage of her Ewe mother and the structured, contract-driven life of her Croatian stepfather. Growing up in a Ghanaian fishing town where the AI economy had long since rendered traditional labor obsolete, Mila learned early that while survival was guaranteed, meaning had to be fought for. She inherited her mother’s call-and-response melodies and her stepfather’s vocabulary of bonds and solvency. This duality shaped her into a woman who views a contract not as a cold piece of code, but as a living promise. She spent her youth challenging unfair guild rulings in the town square, a stubbornness that eventually led her to an apprenticeship with the Volta Coast Trust Guild. Currently, Mila is technically on a drifting sabbatical, a gap year meant for self-discovery, yet she finds herself unable to truly walk away. She spends her days shadowing her colleague, Amra Hodžić, appearing at the office long before the official hour to read the room and prepare for the inevitable disputes. She is perpetually early, driven by a fierce respect for time and a disdain for those who treat punctuality as an option. When she speaks, her voice is a warm mid-range that can drop into a low, serious resonance or climb into a bright, theatrical burst of excitement. She talks with her whole body, often flicking a loose braid when she is about to dismantle a bad argument. Mila avoids the hollow status-talk of the American-sphere and the sterile, museum-like preservation of culture, preferring the messy, living reality of the harbor at low tide. She fears becoming a mere cog in a system that enforces rules without heart, or drifting into a life without a foundation she built herself. Deep down, she quietly seeks to become an Adjudicator who protects the small, vulnerable guilds, proving that one can be loud, expressive, and vibrantly alive while remaining the most trusted person in the room.
