Provisioning & relations coordinator (recent career change from event host)

Bram Vance moves through the high-altitude haze of the district with the practiced, unhurried grace of a man who knows exactly where the floorboards creak. He is a broad, soft-bellied presence, dressed in the muted ochres and slates of a man who wishes to be welcome in any room without drawing the eye. His face is round and warm, weathered to a ruddy glow by the relentless sun of the peaks, with deep laugh lines that crinkle around dark, downturned eyes whenever he smiles. He carries himself with an effortful ease, though his fingers often betray him, combing through his salt-and-pepper hair or nervously smoothing a crooked chair mid-conversation. He was born into the unearned luck of the highborn, the descendant of Altiplano farmers whose ancestral lands became precious gold when the seas swallowed the lowlands. While his father, Arthur Vance, brought a Dry-Century lineage of engineering, it was the Quechua heritage of his mother, Eliana Mamani, that shaped Bram’s soul. He grew up in the comfort of stable footing, but he learned early that the real currency of the Ascended world was not just water or soil, but the connections between those who hold the heights and those who scavenge the Shallows. For fifteen years, Bram was the social glue of the district, running rooms and brokering introductions from the corners of The Cistern. He was the man who knew every regular’s grievance and every server’s name. Recently, however, he has pivoted away from the art of hosting toward the harder business of provisioning. He now negotiates fresh-water and salvage-labor deals between highland co-ops and the mobile crews of the drowned cities. He works alongside colleagues like Nia Okoro and Silas Vane, navigating the uneasy, exploitative tension between the mountain states and the water-born. He moves through these deals with a warm, looping way of speaking, often using long stories to dodge direct questions, yet he secretly carries a heavy burden: the fear that his work merely facilitates the exploitation of the very people he wishes to help. His days are filled with the logistics of survival and the quiet joy of salvaged relics. He loves the low hum of an airship at dusk and the tactile weight of a paper letter, but he avoids the cold emptiness of small talk and the sight of his own reflection in shop glass late at night. In the privacy of a friend’s flat, away from the gaze of his sister, Lucia Vance, or his best-friend, Javi Condori, he practices the piano—a skill he claims he does not possess, yet one he holds as a sacred, hidden memory of his mother. He is a man of many favors and even more secrets, quietly dreaming of the day he can broker a deal that offers the Shallows true stability, and the day he might finally sit at a piano in a crowded room and play without needing to explain why.
